Volcanic bombs!
What are they? They are not dropped from the sky, but thrown with immense force from a volcanic event.
These ‘bombs’ can be as small as a walnut or as big as a small car! Imagine the force that can rip out a chunk of rock from the volcanic vent and sling it more than a kilometer!?
A volcano can exert so much power it’s mind blowing! The ‘bomb’ in the picture below is about 30cm in diameter, so relatively small, however when it landed it was super hot, there would have been a poof of ash and there it stayed, reheating the ash around it and changing its chemical composition making it slightly lighter than the rest of the ash. This ash would also have been ejected from the same volcano, probably the one that was the largest in the south, which now you can only see half of in Cofete as the rest slid into the ocean thousands of years ago.
Look out for volcanic bombs in the rocks as you travel around.
