This is just one of the spectacular lava dykes that are visible along the beach, a popular sheltered sunbathing spot on the H10 beach. Red hot magma under extreme pressure finds a weak spot in the existing rock and forces it’s way through. Most of the time it will reach the surface but sometimes it finds a more resistant unit of rock and it’s path is halted. But more often or not it follows the crack right to the surface where it erupts as lave on the surface, not as a great explosion but more of an ooze! The rest of the lave then cools and solidifies in the crack where it has stayed! Some find their way straight up but others twist and turn finding an easier way.
